SLIDESHOW: Selston strike early to dash Holbrook hopes

Leaders Selston were the ones to get them both at the Parish Hall ground to maintain their one-point advantage over Eastwood Community at the top of the table.

An early penalty was awarded when Kane Hempshall picked the Saints’ rearguard only to be unceremoniously hauled to the ground. Skipper Ben Moore made no mistake from 12 yards.

The home side’s lead was doubled moments later. Dominic Airey forced a corner, Moore swung it deep to Wayne Cooke whose knockdown was well controlled and then swept in by Tom Widdowson.

But it was far from smooth sailing for Selston.

Holbrook squandered a chance to get back into the game from the penalty spot before half-time. Jake Ball standing tall to block Matt Pearce’s thunderbolt of a spot kick.

Selston didn’t heed the warning and started slowly after the interval. Holbrook took the hint and got themselves back in the game just five minutes into the second half, Emmanuel Freeman sweeping home from close range.

Holbrook’s hopes of finding a way back into the game were dented when Sean Gregory smashed one from 25 yards to restore the two-goal margin and then completely dashed when Daniel Henshaw headed in from close range to make it 4-1.

The defeat sees Holbrook remain rooted to the foot of the table, unable to build on last week’s 3-2 win over Southwell City, and with a trip to Swanwick Pentrich Road on Saturday.

Selston, meanwhile, have scored four in their last three matches in all competitions, all at home, and travel to fourth-placed South Normanton.
