Should Curtis Weston be offered a new contract by Chesterfield?

Boss James Rowe said Weston had been outstanding since he arrived at the club and he repaid the manager’s belief in him with a brilliant outing in a 6-0 thrashing of the Bees.

If last season had not been curtailed, Weston would have picked up the club’s player of the year award.

He started this campaign quite slow but he had suffered a slight calf strain in pre-season so he was playing catch-up.

The central midfielder has started every game apart from the FA Trophy tie against Brackley Town and is one of the first names on the team sheet.

Off the field, the former Gillingham man has taken on the role of leading online fitness classes for his teammates during isolation periods.

So should he be offered a new contract when his deal runs out at the end of this season?

At the moment it is hard to argue against not doing so.

He is yet to find the back of the net but he is playing in a deeper role compared to last season.

He has struck up a promising partnership with Tom Whelan and Jak McCourt and those three really work well together.

Rowe has been keen to bring the average age of the squad down but you would not know Weston is 34 given his high energy performances and fitness levels.

If he is to stay, he would have to come into the new wage structure just as those who re-signed last summer and Joe Rowley have done.

The deciding factor might be what league Chesterfield are playing in next season.

There are still 26 games to play and I think the Spireites have a chance of making the play-offs if they can take advantage of their games in hand.

That is not to say that Weston couldn’t do a job in League Two because I think he could, at least as a squad player, but his age might go against him.

If it is going to be another season of National League football for the Blues then I would definitely be looking to keep him.

Whatever the decision, he can certainly hold his head up high.
