Sheffield Wednesday: Carlos Carvalhal pleased with Owls after 1-1 Alfreton draw

The Owls were held to a 1-1 draw by National League North outfit Alfreton Town with Sergiu Bus’ second half goal cancelled out.

While not concerned about the result, Carvalhal identified several issues to work on but was rather happy with how his side put his plans into action.

“It was good,” the Portuguese said. “The opposition are a tough time, organised very well especially in defence and for us it caused problems.

“We kept the ball for a long, long time but we need to improve the team more of course.

“We talked about it before the match that it was not important to score, it was important what we were doing and shape what we were doing.

“And also, to see the positions that we are missing to bring players in.

“All the time in this kind of match there are good things and there are bad things.

“With the good things we are happy. Some mistakes we must correct in the next days so we are better for the next match.”

New signings Marco Matias, Darryl Lachman, Vincent Sasso, Jack Hunt and Ross Wallace were all handed game time at the Impact Arena.

Matias had only trained twice with the club while Wallace has yet to take part in a training session.

Carvalhal will demand more committed tackling from his side when they visit Ilkeston on Wednesday, describing aggression as his biggest disappointment of the day.

He said: “What I did not like so much was the aggression in the tackle.

“We need to be more aggressive in the tackle and to create more problems to the opposition. We must do much better.

“And when I talk in attack I don’t just mean the attackers. We need more intensity in attack.

“The transition to defence was good, we recovered the ball in a short time

“ We moved the ball quickly to attack and the goal that we scored, we recovered the ball and got it into attack and scored a goal.”

Glenn Loovens was withdrawn after half an hour with injury but Carvalhal was not to concerned and expects him to train on Monday.

The head coach also revealed Jack Hunt suffered a knock after featuring in the second half but also expects him back in training.

Keiren Westwood and Stevie May both missed out with slight knocks but will train next week.
