Sheffield Wednesday: Lavery stars as Owls kids beat Spireites

Caolan Lavery boosted his claim for a place in Sheffield Wednesday’s first-team with a second half brace to help Owls’ Under-21s beat Chesterfield 4-1 in a friendly today.

The striker, fit-again following a serious knee injury, played a key part in Wednesday’s fifth minute opener with a neat back pass into the path of Rhys McCabe, whose cross was turned in by Emmanuel Dieseruvwe.

Caolan Lavery scored twice for Wednesday's development squad.

Fresh from a loan spell at Alfreton, Cameron Dawson had to be alert to tip over Dan Gardner’s fierce effort.

Dieseruvwe drilled an audacious half volley inches off target just before the visitors equalised through Romuald Boco, who beautifully lifted the ball over Dawson.

Against the run of play, Wednesday regained the lead in the 66th minute as Lavery, an unused substitute in Saturday’s goalless draw at Huddersfield Town, nodded in substitute Jack Stobbs’ pinpoint centre.

Paul Corry struck the crossbar as the hosts piled on the pressure and Northern Ireland Under-21 international Lavery bagged his second from the penalty spot after being hauled down in the area.

Dieseruvwe completed the scoring, heading in Lavery’s teasing delivery after a great crossfield pass by Corry.

Owls: Dawson, Young, Floro, De Havilland (Beatson 11), Sanders, Corry, McCabe (Stobbs 61), Croasdale, Lavery, Meadows (Hanna HT), Dieseruvwe. Substitutes: McDonagh.
