Ben Moore opened the scoring for visitors Selston before Conor Carter equalised for the home side in Bulwell’s only high point of the entire match.

Joe Riley restored Selston’s advantage five minutes from the break before the away side ran away with it in the second half, scoring five more goals.

Tom Widdowson, Sean Gregory, Riley with his second, Jamie Renshaw and an own goal completing the rout that moved Selston to third with games in hand.

Selston visited Bullwell looking to get back on track following two losses on the bounce – both in cup competitions – and continue their push up the league table.

Following a bright start where both teams looked to attack at every opportunity Selston skipper Moore spotted the Bulwell keeper off his line and chipped delightfully to get Selston on the score sheet after just eight minutes.

There followed a period of end to end football, Carter and Jamie Walker looking dangerous for the home side. However, the first real opportunity fell to the visitors when Sean Gregory slipped a ball through the back line for Joe Riley to run onto and he was up ended in the penalty area.

The referee awarded a penalty in the face of disbelief from the home side who were convinced the defender, Krause, got the ball first. Aaron Brady stepped up to take the spot kick but blazed his kick way over the bar.

On 27 minutes the lively Walker broke high up field, Selston’s Rory Davies slid in to intervene and won the ball but with both players grounded, Walker reacted quickest and poked the ball back to Carter in support and he slammed home from 22 yards to level.

Bulwell continued to create some pressure, Carter found himself with a shooting opportunity wide right but dragged his shot well wide of the far post.

Selston maintained their own goal threat, Sean Gregory found Aaron Brady’s feet following a clever run from the Selston striker his shot, though, struck a post and rebounded to safety with the Bulls keeper well beaten.

Selston started to get on top of the game stretching the Bulwell back line left and right. On 32 minutes Bulwell’s day took a turn for the worse. Walker, already in the referee’s notebook for a foul, blocked Selston’s attempted quick free kick after he had fouled left back Jamie Renshaw. The referee took a dim view and duly showed the yellow again and Walker was given his marching orders.

Sean Gregory drove through the heart of Bulwell to get clear on the edge of the box but his shot was weak. Bulwell won a free kick on the right wing and Jay Knight failed to connect with a great ball in across the 6 yard box.

When it seemed like Bulwell had weathered the storm and would make it to half time on level terms, Selston hit twice in quick succession to lead 3-1 at the break. Aaron Brady laid a ball beautifully for Joe Riley to smash home from inside the area and Ben Moore and that man Brady again combined, with the Selston top scorer crossing for Tom Widdowson to stroke home to put the away side 2 goals to the good at half time.

Bulwell came out for the second half and looked determined to prevent Selston extending their lead, they did keep Selston at bay for 8 minutes, however, when the Bulls defence sat back protecting their penalty area Sean Gregory took the space offered and smashed home a shot into the top corner from 22 yards to give Selston an unassailable 4-1 lead.

Ten minutes late Selston poured more hurt on the tiring ten men of Bulwell. Tom Widdowson crossed from the left, Carl Moore reacted first to win the ball and laid the ball back to the edge of the area where Joe Riley controlled well before hitting a half volley into the top corner for his second and Selston’s 5th.

Selston introduced fresh legs, with Dominic Airey making an immediate impact, hitting a great shot from an acute angle that the Bulls keeper did well to parry onto the bar and away to safety.

The home side weren’t completely impotent, Conner Carter struck a post with a great effort on 75 minutes. Just two minutes later, Carl Moore won the ball in the Bulls area and back heeled delightfully into the path of the marauding Selston left back Jamie Renshaw who rolled back the years and swept home with his right foot to make it 6-1 to the visitors. Unfortunately, Carter had to withdraw soon after with injury leaving the home side with just 9 men

Substitute Wayne Cooke finished off the rout on 80 minutes when he drove into the box and shot and with the aid of a deflection just managed to beat the keeper to make it 7.

Sean Gregory almost had the last word when he struck another excellent effort from over 20 yards, this time though, his effort rebounded off the post to safety.

This win cements Selston’s position in the top three with games in hand on all those around them, big games against Clay Cross, Pinxton and Belper in the coming weeks will be critical to the Parishioner’s progress.
