The caption for the first is self-explanatory: this January 1939 game itself offered a chance for Chesterfield manager Norman Bullock to get one up on his old employers - and his future ones, too, as he went back to Bury in 1945.

Players might play for a number of sides, but they become associated with one club that draws them home, and that was the case with Bullock and Bury.

Originally a centre-forward, Bullock made a successful conversion to centre-half in 1928 and came to spend all his playing career at Gigg Lane.

He won the first of three England caps in 1923.

The second photo features action from the 1994-5 Wembley final of the fourth-tier play-off between the two sides.

What looks like a typically powerful Nicky Law header on goal is actually The Lawman shaping to thump one into his own net, for that is goalie Billy Stewart’s arm coming out to punch.

Just behind him. Nobby Rogers, at least, is looking where the ball should be going.
