The game finished 2-1 to the Spireites, with goals from Terry Shanahan and Ernie Moss cancelling out a Shrews goal from Mike Kearney

It was Chesterfield’s third straight home win and lifted Joe Shaw’s side towards the middle of the table.

They would flirt with the danger zone again in the new year, but recovered to finish 14th.

The season’s highlights were probably a ‘double’ over Sheffield Wednesday and a curious final game at Crystal Palace, in which a substantial contingent of supporters on the away end was swelled by a significant number of Millwall fans, whose side were promoted as a result of Palace’s failure to win.
