RETRO: Legend on target as the Spireites beat the Shrews
This week's Spireites retro takes us back 41 years to 11th October 1975.
A frustrated Ernie Moss lies prostrate having just failed to beat Shrewsbury goalie Ken Mulhearn to a cross
Rod Fern has seen enough and makes his way back to face Mulhearn’s clearance, when it comes, but two Shrews men - player/manager Alan Durban, left, and midfielder/future Shrews manager Chic Bates seem keen to continue an argument about a handball in the build-up
The game finished 2-1 to the Spireites, with goals from Terry Shanahan and Ernie Moss cancelling out a Shrews goal from Mike Kearney
It was Chesterfield’s third straight home win and lifted Joe Shaw’s side towards the middle of the table.
They would flirt with the danger zone again in the new year, but recovered to finish 14th.
The season’s highlights were probably a ‘double’ over Sheffield Wednesday and a curious final game at Crystal Palace, in which a substantial contingent of supporters on the away end was swelled by a significant number of Millwall fans, whose side were promoted as a result of Palace’s failure to win.
