Relief for Spireites as stretchered off Liam O'Neil avoids serious neck injury

Chesterfield defender Liam O'Neil has escaped a serious neck injury, after being stretchered off at Burton Albion last night and hospitalised.

The injury occured midway through the first half, when the 22-year-old was struck in the face by a fierce shot – but after X-rays and CT scans doctors are satisfied it’s nothing worse than concussion.

In worrying scenes, he received seven minutes of treatment from the medical staff of both teams on the pitch before leaving on a stretcher in a neck brace.

A club statement said: “Chesterfield FC would like to say thank you to the medical staff from Burton Albion and the other accompanying medics for their rapid and thorough action and wish Liam the best for a speedy recovery.”
