Reds’ knockout blow after 3-1 FA Cup defeat

Alfreton Town FC missed out on a lucrative FA Cup run after a below-par 3-1 defeat at Wrexham on Saturday.

The Reds had won the same first round tie at The Racecourse Ground last season.

Wrexham started the tie on the front foot. A weak and wayward angled drive by John Akinde was Alfreton’s muted response, before a promising move by the Reds was instigated by Dan Bradley in the 18th minute with a run by Akinde, but his cross was cut out by Stephen Wright.

In the 24th minute, Wrexham held a firm grip when Andy Bishop’s near post header from a Neil Ashton cross found the net.

In first-half added-time, Bradley opted to shoot from the edge of the area and Wrexham keeper Andy Coughlin pulled off a good save.

Bishop doubled his side’s advantage four minutes after the break, slotting home from ten yards after Joe Clarke had played Brett Ormerod through. Alfreton were thrown a life-line in the 61st minute when Wright tripped Akinde in the area and Jake Speight scored the penalty. The Reds showed vigour, but Wrexham got a third in the 72nd minute. Reds keeper Ross Atkins sprawled to divert Ormerod’s shot, but the ball fell for Jay Harris to score.
