Red Lion beat Bridholme Club to make DFA Sunday Junior Cup quarters

Red Lion Whitt Moor secured a 3-0 victory over fellow Sunday League side Bridholme Club in the third round of The DFA Sunday Junior Cup to set up a home quarter-final tie with Lovell.

For most of the game it was a tight affair with just a wonderful strike from Leigh Brear separating the sides until two late goals extended Red Lions margin of victory.

This game, with both sides from Division Three of The Chesterfield and District Sunday League, looked set up for a close encounter and on a bright November morning so it proved.

The home side secured a lead after 13 minutes when Brear struck home a goal that came from nowhere a wonderful 35 yard drive beating Hollis in the Birdholme goal.

Moments later Dean Duquemin forced Hollis into an excellent save low to his left and as the visitors looked to get back on level terms it was Scott Marshall who headed just wide from a neat short corner routine on the left.

The second period was equally tight, although the clearer chances were being created by Red Lion and on 68 minutes Elliott Hughes thought he had extended the home sides lead his shot beat Hollis in the Birdholme goal but flew back off the left hand upright.

As the game rested on a knife edge and with Birdholme trying to push on for the equaliser Red Lion struck through Ryan Whittaker who poked the ball home in front of defender Shane Burton after 77 minutes.

Birdholme heads were now down and just minutes later it was 3-0 when keeper Hollis couldn’t hold a sharp long range shot and Scott Taylor was on hand to fire home for Red Lion to book that quarter final place.
