OFF THE POST!
What a goal that would have been. Town so patient in their play, forward and back, Asante then hits the post and it bounces out and into the arms of Azaze. 61 played, 0-2.
Reaction from Ben as Spireites double their lead
Well that’ll do it! There was always a concern that the Spireites’ missed chances early on may come back to haunt them, but that fear has been somewhat softened as they are now able to extend their lead and make it Barnet 0-2 Chesterfield. It was the easiest finish Adi Yussuf could ever have hoped after The Bees ‘keeper spilled Akwasi Asante’s initial shot, but it’s a big one for Yussuf as he is off the mark for Town now. Hopefully that can act as a confidence boost for the on-loan striker to grab a few more going forward. 2-0 Chesterfield then, and with the way the game has gone so far, it’s hard to imagine them squandering that lead, and you feel that they’ve just got to guard against complacency now.
YUSSUF!!! His first goal for Chesterfield. Asante’s drilled free-kick from the edge of the area was saved by Azaze but Yussuf followed it in. Azaze will be disappointed with that, weak from him. 0-2. 48 gone.
Barnet HT sub
Baker-Richardson off, Vasiliou on.
HT thoughts from fan writer Ben
Half time at the The Hive then and it’s Barnet 0-1 Chesterfield. The Spireites were rapid out of the blocks and should likely have been more than goal up when Tom Whelan did eventually break the deadlock. It’s not quite been the same Town onslaught following their opening goal, but they have still maintained a strong and arguably dominant footing in the game, and have rarely looked threatened by their hosts this afternoon. James Rowe will likely be frustrated that his side were not able to translate their spell of dominance into a more sizeable advantage on the scoreboard, but I imagine he’ll be happy with the response his players have given performance wise so far today. Three points and a return to form were always the key objectives coming into this one, and if the Spireites can kick on in the second half and see the game out, it has to be seen as a job well done.
Town lead at the break
HT: Barnet 0 v 1 Chesterfield
No exaggeration to say the Spireites should have had three or four. Let’s hope they don’t regret those chances. Tom Whelan’s goal on 10 minutes gave Town the lead.
For Clarke for pulling back on the shirt of Faal as he tried to break away inside his own half. Two minutes added.
Town still in control and are putting together some lovely passing moves. Stating the obvious but they really need a second. Whelan is booked for a foul on halfway. Looked harsh.
By Kerr to deny Faal at the far post after a decent counter by Barnet. 35 gone, 0-1.
Another head injury
This time for Hollis who tried to attack a Chesterfield corner. Barnet’s ‘keeper Azaze looks very suspect on corners. Flapping at everything. Hollis is back on his feet.
Stoppage in play
Break in play due to a head injury for Barnet’s Richards-Everton. The Spireites should be out of sight already, so many chances already.
Goal reaction from fan writer Ben
There it is! 1-0 Chesterfield, and you certainly can’t say it hasn’t been coming! We were only 11 minutes in when the Spireites went in front, and it could quite easily have been 3-0 to the Spireites. Tom Whelan was the man who did manage to break the deadlock, remaining calm when he found himself through on goal and rolling the ball into the Barnet net. A brilliant, fast-paced start from Town, one far more reminiscent of the style of play we’ve become used to under James Rowe than their most recent two displays, and the hosts look a bit shellshocked here so far. Keep this up, and a positive result is almost certainly on the cards for Chesterfield this afternoon.
Bit of a defensive mix-up forces Grant Smith into a decent save and it goes out for a Barnet corner. It comes to nothing.
Maguire whips in a cross from the left, Carline comes flying in at the far post but heads it over the bar. However, Carline was adjudged to have made a foul. 16 gone, 0-1.
TOM WHELAN!!! And what a lovely move that was. Clarke played a perfectly weighted ball into Whelan who ran through and calmy slotted across Azaze. 0-1. 10 gone.
