Player ratings: O'Shea the star man for Spireites

O’Shea took the Derbyshire Times Man of the Match, although there were impressive performances from the likes of Sam Hird and Jamal Campbell-Ryce.

Tommy Lee - 7

The goalkeeper was faultless for the first goal, as the defence in front of him were all at sea and couldn’t clear their lines, and he seemed to be unsighted behind Charlie Raglan for the second, which was a lovely finish. Did everything else well.

Charlie Raglan - 6

A centre-half playing out of position at right-back, acquitted himself well enough but at times looked like a player playing out of position. Had two chances to score. Was beaten for pace by JJ Hooper in the lead up to the second Vale goal, and although he did well to get back, was unable to prevent the shot.

Drew Talbot - 7

Had a solid game, even in the face of a rampaging Port Vale right-back Ben Purkiss in the first half. Was offered more protection after the break, thanks to Gboly Ariyibi keeping Purkiss in his own half.

Sam Hird - 7

Scored an important goal and was every bit as solid at the back as he has been in the last several outings. Tried desperately to prevent Vale’s first goal but was beaten to the ball twice by the AJ Leitch-Smith - the only time Hird was second to anything all afternoon.

Tom Anderson - 7

Perhaps not quite as comfortable as his centre-half partner, but put in his usual no-nonsense display. Allowed Leitch-Smith to get away from him in lead up to opener.

Gary Liddle - 6

Had a poor first half, with a number of loose passes or touches that went out of play. Niggled at the opposition in the second half though, and was under less pressure thanks to the momentum switch when O’Shea and Ariyibi came on.

Connor Dimaio - 6

Missed a good early chance for the hosts, ran about a lot and didn’t do much wrong, but Port Vale midfield were on top in the first half. Half-time replacement looked harsh on the face of it, until the substitutions proved to be match-winning decisions.

Ollie Banks - 6

Didn’t effect the game much in the first half. Better after the break, pressure was largely off however thanks to maurauding midfield team-mates.

Jamal Campbell-Ryce - 7

Industrious in the first half, had a couple of nice moments but final ball was lacking. More influential after the break, took his goal well after it initially looked like he’d taken too long on the ball. More than justified his selection overall.

Rai Simons - 6

Was looking like a positive option for the Spireites going forward, but contribution was limited by the fact that Port Vale controlled the first half action.

Lee Novak - 7

Put in his usual selfless running, chasing lost causes. Looked like another frustrating afternoon until the cavalry arrived after the break. Chances were few and far between. Hasn’t had the service he needs, of late.

Substitutes

Jay O’Shea - 8

Looked a threat every time he got hold of the ball and drove forward. His free-kick found Hird for the second goal, his corner led to Ariyibi’s goal and O’Shea scored the fourth himself with a lovely effort. Largely unplayable.

Gboly Ariyibi - 8

His pace down the left changed the complexion of the game almost instantly, and a dangerous cross led to the equaliser. Showed predatory instinct to take his goal. Kept Purkiss in check and took away a key Vale outlet.

Jake Orrell - 6

Was sent on with a minute or so left, not enough time to make an impact.
