Paul McGinn getting close but Dan Jones suffers yet another setback

The Spireites manager revealed today that Paul McGinn is potentially a week away from a return to action, having almost made a comeback from his hamstring injury last weekend.

But there’s no such luck for the seemingly cursed Dan Jones.

The left-back has suffered yet another setback, over a year since first getting injured in a game against Swindon.

Delivering some pre-Christmas cheer for Town fans, Wilson said: “We were hoping for last week with Paul McGinn, but he still wasn’t right.

“Sadly he had to pull out before the (Peterborough) game.

“Next week? Fingers crossed, maybe, for him.

“I don’t really know but I‘m hoping so.”

It’s two months since Chesterfield fans last saw Scot McGinn, but Jones has had to endure a nightmare since fracturing his ankle last November against Swindon.

He made a tentative comeback with the reserves towards the end of last season before a complication with the screw in his ankle meant more surgery.

The 29-year-old did feature this season, again against Swindon, but his comeback lasted just one game before his problem flared again.

In recent weeks Wilson had been looking forward to welcoming the left-back into the first team fold once more, only for Jones to suffer yet another setback.

“We won’t see Dan Jones for a little while,” he said.

“Dan has had a slight setback, he’s having a bit of a problem with his heel so he’s having to see the specialist again.”

It’s another bitter disappointment for the defender, and his manager, unable to call upon the services of the club’s only natural and experienced left-back.

Wilson said Jones could overcome the frustration, however.

“Dan’s been out for a long time, 13 months and to get so close as he did, this was another blow for him.

“It gets disappointing for players when they get so close.

“But he’s resolute, he’ll get through it, he knows he’s got to be patient.”
