OPINION: Frustrating time in transfer market for Derby County fans

Whilst the nation sits gripped by the World Cup, fans have one eye on the pre-season actions of their teams.

Derby fans are no different and so far they appear to be a little frustrated by the lack of transfer incomings.

Darren Bent, Jason Shackell and Chris Baird have not had their contracts renewed and Andreas Weimann has been sold to Bristol City, but the long running saga of Matej Vydra’s apparent transfer to Leeds United is still not resolved.

There has been reported interest from QPR for both Chris Martin and Alex Pearce.

There’s not been a shortage of players linked to Derby. Tammy Abraham, Jay DaSilva, Mason Mount and Jack Marriott are amongst players mentioned, but thus far there’s been no signings for the first team.

Understandably fans get frustrated, but it was made perfectly clear that we would have to sell to sign.

If you scrutinise the club accounts, the reason is very clear. The club needs to cut it’s losses and indeed tidy up the housekeeping in the accounts department.

I feel we may have to grit our teeth and grin and bear it for a while too.

Clubs like our near rivals Nottingham Forest have been splashing the cash, but they’ve had to go through austerity measures to sort out their finances.

For the past few seasons they’ve had to trade from the bargain basement.

Unless we can sell the likes of Vydra for a high fee we will be shopping in Footballs discount shop.

Even loans command considerable fees nowadays and unless theres more personnel going out through the exit door, they may be few and far between too
