The decision to sign Ched Evans seems to be a good gamble so far as he scored on his debut against Ilkeston and bagged an assist against Derby County.
So as long as he can keep that form up and win his trial, the fans should have no problem in keeping him.
However there have been other signings that have caught the fans eyes. Whether it be a former Chelsea wizard Reece Mitchell or two non-league hopefuls like midfielder Jon Nolan and striker Kristian Dennis.
Overall I am happy with the signings that we have brought in. They won’t all set League One on fire (that isn’t a Will Grigg pun), but they all will have a use at this club.
I know people won’t be happy that we got Evans instead of Lee Novak but I am really optimistic about having a good season.
The squad from last season can be criticised about the lack of depth in every position.
However, even though you can argue that there haven’t been enough signings to cover every position. I would agree with goalkeeper which I would get at least one more in but apart from that I would say that we are looking strong.
However, looking strong on paper and looking strong on the pitch are two different things.
But luckily Chesterfield have performed well enough in their pre-season games. Even though the side led by Gary Liddle lost against Derby County, Sheffield Wednesday and European side Apollon Limassol, the Spireites have put up a good performance in every friendly.
So the on field commitment is looking promising heading into the new season.
The only thing that is bothering me about the club at the moment is the off field management. The summer has provided some comedic but worrying news that involves the powers that be.
Incidents like James Higgins raffle gate, the numerous staff leaving the club and the Ernie Moss charity match debacle. It is stories like this that make me a little bit afraid of the club’s state at this moment of time.
Overall, I am mostly happy with our football club. The players and management are showing passion heading into the League One season and are looking like they could have a crack at promotion.
However, and I know that most fans will agree with me, if the shenanigans keep happening with the club’s hierarchy then some changes will have to be made.
