New Mills 2-0 Wakefield - match report

Played against the vast backdrops of empty terracing of the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats stadium, the first 45 minutes proved to be a dour affair punctuated only by numerous offside decisions, predominantly against the visitors.

The sole occasion that saw either goalkeeper truly tested came on the half hour, when Jack Poxon’s stinging effort brought a decent save from home custodian Shaun Penn.

After the interval the Millers’ purposeful approach was rewarded with the opening goal.

Jamie Rother’s free-kick from a wide position was met in the danger area by the merest of flicks from Carlos Meakin to make it 1-0.

New Mills keeper Peter Collinge was largely untroubled for the first hour of the game but had to be alert to block a skidding effort from substitute Cameron Lyn at the foot of his near upright.

The Millers went on to ride the Wakefield storm that followed, with Collinge’s defence pitching in.

In the final minute Rother’s cross-cum-shot found Rhys Nevins in space who easily slotted home to ensure the date with Warrington.
