A short statement from the club gave recognition to the part Warner played in saving the club in 2001 after Darren Brown’s ill-fated tenure.

Warner, who first joined the board in 1993, paid off a six-figure loan and worked with the Chesterfield Football Supporters Society (CFSS).

He said: “I see my role as bringing everyone together. It is important that everyone gets behind the club as we seek to find a solution to our current problems.”

Meanwhile, director Ashley Carson has announced pland to run an open question and answer session with supporters.

Carson made the statement via his Twitter account over the weekend and full details are yet to be published.

He posted: “@ChesterfieldFC We have a busy week ahead. The fight goes on to save the club... plus match Tuesday.. will keep fans updated.”

It comes shortly after it was revealed the club needed £500,000 to maintain running costs between now and Christmas.

Here is what supporters had to say following the news on the Derbyshire Times Facebook page.

Richard Faulkner said: “Let’s hope for a good cup run!!”

Glenis Rumsby added: “Hang on I’ll look down back of my sofa.”

Simon Coy posted: “I live in the town, play walking football for the Senior Spireites but am not a supporter of the club. However I am very saddened by what is happening as Chesterfield FC is a fantastic, family friendly club which is a pleasure to visit. Looking from the outside the future looks really bleak. I hope they can find a buyer or Dave Allen is prepared as the owner to keep providing funds until one is found. Very sad times.”

Janet Pawley suggested: “If every person in Chesterfield gave a pound you may have enough money!”
