Morgan: All but four League One outfits are selling clubs

The Chesterfield assistant says accepting reasonable bids for players is the name of the game for the vast majority of the teams in the division.

And with the January transfer window approaching, Morgan admitted the Spireites’ management team would just have to deal with the situation if players left.

Scouts from 13 clubs, including Premier League champions Leicester City, Manchester City and Spurs were in attendance as Town lost 5-2 at Peterborough United on Saturday.

Morgan said their interest, if it was in Chesterfield players, was a badge of honour.

“If there is interest it means we’re doing something right on the pitch,” he said.

“If the players are playing well and people from above want to come and take them and buy them then we’ve got to deal with that.”

Finding bargains and developing their talent before making a profit is the way a lot of clubs survive – Chesterfield are no different, in Morgan’s eyes, and he believes there are only four clubs who don’t have to operate in that way.

He said: “Chesterfield will always be a selling club, as most clubs are. There’s not many League One clubs who could turn down good money for players.

“If you’ve taken a player on a free, got him in your team and he’s playing well so someone offers good money for him, it’s not always ideal for the management to lose important players and it’s frustrating for supporters, but if you’re taking young lads and developing them and moving them on that’s what keeps the club going.

“Off the top of my head there’s probably only four clubs in this division that wouldn’t have to sell players. And even them, the teams at the top, if they get good bids for players they move them on and then they recruit, use the money to strengthen.”
