Morecambe 2 Chesterfield 2: Battling draw not enough for Spireites
Kristian Dennis and Andy Kellett struck as Chesterfield came from two goals down to seal a point at the Globe Arena.
Jack Lester’s side trailed 2-0 at the break but dominated the second half – however, despite their best efforts, they failed to get the third goal they needed to boost their hopes of League Two survival.
Morecambe took the lead in the 17th minute after a well-worked free-kick. With Chesterfield expecting a cross into the box, Adam McGurk played in Michael Rose to his left and the Morecambe skipper put in a dangerous delivery, teeing up Garry Thompson to head past Aaron Ramsdale at the far post.
A midfield battle ensued, with Chesterfield enjoying plenty of possession but struggling to create openings.
Andy Kellett threatened with a run into the box which ended with a shot that was well-blocked by Dean Winnard before the home side doubled their lead on 33 minutes.
Again, the Spireites defence was caught flat as Morecambe striker Callum Lang chased down a loose ball and showed more resolve than the visitors’ back line to get a free run on goal, which ended with a cool finish under the stranded Ramsdale.
Chesterfield boss Jack Lester made two changes at the break, with Chris O’Grady and George Smith coming on, and it quickly paid dividends as the visitors pulled one back through top-scorer Kristian Dennis.
The chance looked to have gone begging when Dennis initially failed to control the ball into the box but he recovered sharply and struck a stunning volley past Danijel Nizic.
The visitors then took charge and deservedly added a second with 15 minutes to go. Ramsdale drove a free-kick into the Morecambe box and the ball was headed into the danger area for Kellet to smash a half-volley past Nizic from 12 yards out.
Both teams had chances to win it as play swung from end to end in the final stages.
Gregg Wylde fired over for Morecambe before Louis Dodds headed a Jacob Brown cross inches wide.
