Moore tipped for relegated Spireites

Former Rotherham United manager Ronnie Moore has been installed as the early favourite to replace Jack Lester as Chesterfield boss.

The 65-year-old was most recently employed by Eastleigh in the National League, where the Spireites will ply their trade next season now that relegation is confirmed.

A 4-1 defeat at Forest Green on Saturday means that Town and last night’s results mean the Spireites are definitely down.

Lester’s exit was confirmed on Monday morning, by mutual consent and three of his staff went with him.

Moore, who the Star believes was keen on the job the last time it became available last September and is likely to be interested again this time round, is 3/1 with some bookies.

John Sheridan, currently at Fleetwood but due to depart at the end of the season, is 7/2.

Sheridan previously managed the Spireites to a League Two title and an EFL Trophy triumph.

Club director Ashley Carson, who confirmed last week the club’s £2.2m playing budget will be slashed by half, won’t be taking sole responsibility for the appointment.

“I’m not going to take that decision on my own,” he said.

“We’re not going to rush it.

“There will be an interview committee and a lot of work done on this to ensure we get the right person.”
