Millers reserves run in 14-goal win

New Mills Reserves went goal crazy on the opening day of the North West Counties Football League season against Silsden at Church Lane on Saturday afternoon.

Adam Blackburn marked his comeback to the club by opening proceedings in the 15th minute.

That lead was then doubled on the half-hour mark when Blackburn out-jumped both goalkeeper and defender alike to register his second.

Strike partner Nick Wood then got in on the scoring act with a quick-fire double before Alex Adrio completed the first half’s work by netting on the stroke of the interval with an angled drive to make it 5-0.

Blackburn then completed the perfect hat-trick six minutes after the break for the sixth of the day.

Debutant Andy Ruffell also got in on the act shortly after and this was quickly followed by a clinical finish into the roof of the net by substitute Tony Williamson to make it 8-0.

Nick Wood bagged the second hat-trick of the game with 20 minutes remaining when he nodded home Andy Ramwell’s deflected cross at the back post.

Chris Ndukuba brought brief respite for Silsden as he netted a consolation strike but it was only temporary as The Millers racked up a tenth soon after.

Wood’s fourth made it ten before a rare goal for skipper Jordan Cooper compounded the scoring.

Wood’s fifth strike completed the dozen.

Tony Williamson then scored his second before the goalscoring was completed by arguably the best effort of the game when James Fairbrother’s sumptuous effort simply flew past the beleaguered Silsden goalkeeper to give a truly emphatic scoreline of 14-1.
