Midlands Regional Alliance: Chesterfield Town keep slim hopes of promotion alive

Castle Donington Cobras are safely through to the semi-finals of the MRA Challenge Cup following their 5-2 victory at higher-ranked Allestree, writes Craig Gibbons.

The Division One leaders showed no mercy against their Premier Division hosts as two goals from Will Pearson and one apiece from Karl Munton, Josh Buchanan and Jack Purkiss secured the win for Cobras.

A Bradley Foley penalty and own-goal contributed to the Trees’ scoring.

There was no shocks at Burton Town as Allenton United showed the class difference between Premier Division and Division Two football as Dave Carr (2), Danny Briscoe and Shaun Roberts sent the visitors through to the last four.

Newhall United also booked their place in the semi-finals with a 3-1 victory over fellow Premier outfit Derby Singh Brothers thanks to strikes from Karl Wayte, James Ward and Gaz Feasey.

The other quarter-final clash between Rowsley 86 Reserves and Shirebrook Rangers is scheduled for March 25.

In the sole Division One game, Chesterfield Town kept their slim hopes of promotion alive with a 3-1 victory at Sherwin Athletic.

Callum Featherstone netted a brace for Town whose scoring was completed via an own goal.

Virgil Stevenson got on the scoresheet for Athletic.

Elsewhere, there was only one clash in Division Two as Daniel Watson’s treble went a long way to Wirksworth Ivanhoe Reserves’ 4-0 thumping of Punjab United.

Jake Howard was also on target for Ivanhoe.
