Giles Coke, the midfielder Jack Lester signed in the January transfer window to give his team some steel in the middle, injured his hamstring on his debut.

The ex Sheffield Wednesday man, who hadn’t played competitive football in two years prior to his Proact bow, then hurt his Achilles trying to come back from the first knock.

Even though Chesterfield’s season has already finished, in effect, with relegation - Coke still wants to play.

Caretaker boss Ian Evatt revealed: “He’s trying to. He’s doing everything he can to be available for the last couple of games.

“He’s still not there yet but he’s certainly back running and trying to make himself available.”

Coke’s attitude has earned the respect of the man in temporary charge of Town.

“I love that, the fact that we can’t change the outcome of the season but he’s still willing to put himself out there to play.

“I can’t speak highly enough of Giles.”
