The former Owls defender, currently Chesterfield’s academy manager, has overseen an improvement in the side’s defensive performances but at the expense of creativity.

Chesterfield have lost their last six league games, two under Smith, but showed they could compete with two draws in the FA Cup against lofty Walsall, who eventually won on penalties.

Smith’s four games in charge have seen Spireites concede just three goals, compared to a dozen in Dean Saunders’ final four games.

There seems to be no rush for the club to bring in a permanent replacement. Former player and ex-Barnsley, Owls and Blades boss Danny Wilson could be a possible replacement, with chief executive Chris Turner believed to be enthusiastic about the experienced 55-year-old - who has more than 1,000 managerial games under his belt.

Wilson lives in Chesterfield and his odds have gradually shortened with the bookies.

Smith is preparing his players for a tough time between Christmas and New Year, with a trip to Peterborough United followed by a home game against Coventry City.
