Several players have also left the club, while it is understood an announcement regarding potential new investment could also be imminent in the coming days.

O’Neill, who took over the reins from long-serving manager Nicky Law towards the end of the campaign, has not been offered a new deal, with fans’ favourite Clayton - who remained a player as well as O’Neill’s assistant and scored over 100 goals in two spells with the club - also having been released.

Other players to have been released include Adam Priestley, Paul Marshall, Ryan Wilson and captain Andy Monkhouse, while it is believed midfielder Mark Shelton has turned down the offer of a new deal.

No official announcement has yet been made by the club on any of the departures, but Clayton posted a message on social media on Monday confirming he had left and wishing the club all the best for the future.

Alfreton narrowly avoided relegation from the National League North last season, although Worcester City’s subsequent and voluntary three-division demotion means that the Reds may well have survived even if they’d finished third from bottom in the league.

Meanwhile, the allocation of teams for the National League North next season has been provisionally confirmed.

Coming up from step three are Blyth Spartans, Spennymoor Town and Leamington, whilst relegated North Ferriby United, Southport and York City have dropped from the National League.

FC Halifax Town joined AFC Fylde in being promoted at the weekend as they beat Chorley 2-1 after extra-time in the National League North play-off final.
