It appears as if the Spireites will need to be in title-winning form to stay in League Two, with four wins from their five remaining games potentially necessary.

And they’ll first have to pick themselves up from a bitterly disappointing weekend, during which they lost 1-0 at home to near neighbours Mansfield Town.

“Obviously after the game on Saturday we were very down, we knew it was a big game for the fans and everyone at the club but it wasn’t to be,” he said.

“It’s not a good time for the club, we’re all devastated about what’s happened this season.

“We’re in a battle, performances haven’t been good enough away from home, especially at Grimsby and Port Vale.

“We’ve got a lot of pressure on us.”

But the 21-year-old, who partnered Ian Evatt in a solid-looking defensive display on Saturday, says hope and optimism still abound in the dressing room.

“We think we’re capable of winning four out of five games,” he said.

“We see the games we’ve got as good opportunities to go and get points on the board.

“The lads believe we’ll get out of the situation we’re in.”

He admits tonight’s assignment at Exeter will be difficult, given the hosts’ successful season and automatic promotion hopes.

They are, however, a team Chesterfield have already beaten this season and Maguire says the Spireites will be positive in their approach.

“We’ve got a game now to put things right.

“We’ll go down there trying to get three points.

“They’ve had another good season.

“But we believe the way we’ll set-up is the right thing to do to go and win the football match.”
