Leon Owen’s goal nine minutes from time gave promotion-chasing Buxton U19s a deserved 1-0 victory over Ollerton FC U19s on Tuesday evening.
Buxton looked the most likely to break the deadlock, with Heywood, Hopkins and Bridge all going close and Ballington seeing his 25-yard volley fly just wide.
It was a similar story after the break, with Ballington firing wide and Airey unable to cleanly connect with a free header five yards from goal.
But with just nine minutes left on the clock, Owen stole in at the back post to meet a perfectly-flighted cross from Gilbride to score the decisive goal.
Ollerton’s captain was sent off with five minutes remaining, while Zak Heywood was unlucky not to cap a fine display with a goal as his 40-yard strike just cleared the crossbar with the keeper beaten.
The Under-19s’ next home fixture is on March 12 when Harworth Colliery visit the Silverlands (kick-off 7.45pm).
