Buxton overcame High Peak rivals New Mills in a narrow victory that secured their place in the last eight of this year’s Derbyshire Cup.
With both sides having just 48 hours rest after their weekend matches, changes were aplenty in both camps, with seven alterations for Buxton and two for the Millers.
Both teams adopted a passing style with a fairly even opening half-hour that was short on chances.
Jack Bradbury had the first real opportunity for the visitors after being set up by Craig King, but Peter Collinge’s legs denied the youngsters low drive.
Craig King then opened the scoring for the visitors just before the break thanks to an expert finish, low into the net.
The goal was set up by Kiarno Samms, the Bucks’ youngster who was one of the seven changes.
Early in the second half Buxton continued where they left off with Neil Stevens’ 20-yard lob that went close.
The hosts then enjoyed their best passage of the game, and it wasn’t long before they drew level.
Just after the hour mark Daniel Grimshaw latched onto a ball, turned his man and finished well.
John Stanway then made a cluster of important saves in the Buxton goal, as Roy Soule’s men stepped up the intensity.
Despite the pressure being put on by New Mills, Buxton manager Martin McIntosh made two substitutions that paid off.
The introduction of Grant Black and Matt Thornhill midway through the second period made the difference and it wasn’t long before the visitors struck twice in the space of five minutes to open up a sizeable gap.
First, Black’s cross was headed home in trademark style by Mark Reed on 70 minutes.
Four minutes later Thornhill lifted a shot over the onrushing Collinge to make it 3-1.
King then had an effort that was hacked away by Collinge before New Mills retained their attacking nature when Michael Smith’s late effort made for a tense finish.
Despite the tight scoreline, that strike proved to be only a consolation as McIntosh’s men held on for the victory that sends them into the last eight.
