Hot-shot Morris sets the bar high

Buxton’s top scorer Lee Morris says anything other than a top-five finish this season would be a bitter disappointment.

Morris believes a strong start by the Bucks - 25 points from their opening 16 league matches - and the quality of the squad, should mean a tilt at the play-off positions come the end of the campaign.

Speaking to the Advertiser, Morris said: “I think with the squad we’ve got it would be a travesty for us not to reach the play-offs.

“If we finished below fifth place then it wouldn’t be acceptable in my opinion.”

Despite the good start made, Morris is looking for more consistency from him and his team-mates, a case highlighted by last week’s surprise 1-0 defeat at home to Stocksbridge Park Steels.

Morris said: “I think against sides such as Skelmersdale and Fylde we’ve played really well, why that is I’m not too sure.

“It’s hard to put your finger on why we’ve tended to struggle against the likes of Stocksbridge and Droylsden.

“We just hope the Stocksbridge performance, in particular, was a one-off.”

Morris has already reached double figures this season in all competitions and is well on course to beat last year’s tally, when he registered 18 goals.

Morris, speaking before Wednesday’s clash at Sheffield FC, added: “I actually set myself a target of 15 goals at the start of this season. Anymore than that is a bonus really.

“Sometimes it can be hard to score a lot when you play with one up front like we do.

“But I think with the wingers we’ve got here then we should be creating more chances.

“I’ve probably been guilty of missing some chances where I should have really scored but if you’d have offered me ten goals at this stage of the season I’d have taken it.”
