Lester praises team's battling performance in stirring comeback

The boss wasn’t happy with the way his side went 2-0 down to the Shrimps, but a double change at the break paid dividends for Town.

“We started the game quite well and were controlling the tempo of the game but we just didn’t do the basics at the back and helped them get a two goal head start,” he said.

“We were all disappointed with the free-kick that they scored their first goal from as it was a great tackle from Alex Whitmore, but that is the sort of luck we have been having.

“We had to do something at the break and we made two changes by bringing on Chris O’Grady and George Smith, and went more direct, and it paid off.

“We always thought that if we got one, we could go on and get two and in the end, we are all a bit disappointed that we didn’t get the third to make it the perfect comeback but that point could be vital come the end of the season.”

The first goal, that sparked the comeback, came from top goalscorer Kristian Dennis, who hammered home his 19th of the season.

A former striker himself, Lester appreciated the quality of the finish and the importance of the goal.

“Goals change games and Kristian Dennis scored an absolute cracker to get us back into it and we just got stronger,” he said.

“The lads showed a lot of fight and spirit and I thought it was a fantastic battling performance.

“The lads gave absolutely everything which is all we can ask for and we could have pinched it at the end.”
