Lester knows how much needs to be done to turn Spireites around

New Chesterfield chief Jack Lester insists he and his coaching staff know they have plenty to do after defeat at Lincoln City.

The Spireites sunk to their fifth successive league defeat after Michael Bostwick’s opener and Andy Kellett’s own goal.

Kristian Dennis grabbed a consolation late on from the spot, but the club needs more than consolation goals at this stage.

Lester said: “We know we’ve got work to do. We said that the moment we walked through the door.

“It’s going to take time and it is. You can see it’s not just a good team talk or waving a magic wand.

“We’re trying to improve these players, we’re trying to improve them collectively.

“They’re giving the best they can and it’s about sticking together and the tide will turn.”

The Spireites struggled to create anything meaningful going forward, a problem they have had all season - and before.

Chesterfield have scored just 10 league goals this term, joint second worst in the division.

And Lester said the game was over after half an hour when they were 2-0 down.

He added: “It wasn’t a performance to be proud of.

“The game was over after half an hour, we didn’t get out the traps.

“We had a little bit of a flurry at the end and you’re hopeful of nicking something but we didn’t start the game well enough.

“The quality on the ball wasn’t there. We never really have a breather.

“The fight was there a little bit but when you don’t look after the football it’s wave after wave.”
