Lady Luck smiles as the Shiners take the victory

Lady Luck was smiling on South Normanton Athletic as they overcame Blaby & Whetstone in the East Midlands Counties League Premier.

The first half saw Blaby kick down hill with the vicious wind right behind them. Smith tipped a shot over the bar as early as the second minute from distance.

From then it was a hard game to watch, all action, end to end but without much end product. Kyle Johnson’s long range effort on 41 minutes sailed narrowly over.

The second half started like the first with Smith making a brilliant low dive to his left to put the ball wide.

Phil Massingham replied immediately for Normanton with a long range shot that the Blaby keeper saved.

Blaby took the lead when Aaron Preston unleashed a tremendous strike from 14 yards.

Kane Jellyman hit the bar for Normanton from wide left before Blaby were reduced to ten men when Ross Lavin saw red.

Normanton levelled two minutes later from a wind-assisted corner that saw Blaby’s George Tyler have the final touch.

The wind played the biggest part of the game when Tom Lewis scored from a corner - the wind blew the ball straight into the top corner to take all three points.

Normanton are at Canal Street against table topping St Andrews on Saturday, April 2 (3pm KO).
