John Pemberton on whether he will change his attacking approach after Chesterfield concede four goals against Harrogate Town

John Pemberton will be encouraging Chesterfield to continue to “come out swinging” but has warned his players they will have to defend better as preparations now turn to Chorley on Saturday.

The Spireites caretaker boss described it as being like a “basketball match” at times but said he was “alright” with that.

When he asked if he might change his approach to help tighten up the defence, he said: “Not really but let me tell you why.

“Probably when we play against teams of that calibre, yes. But you can’t just sit in, that is not what we have been good at.

“What we have been good at is getting on the front foot.

“When we first came in everyone was dropping deep, you can’t defend that way.

“If you are on the ropes in a boxing match you can’t just keep taking punches you have got to either come out and start swinging or you go down and that is the mentality we have.

“We might play teams who have not got that quality who we could have probably put away in the first-half (against Harrogate) so it is about getting the balance of wanting to impose ourselves on teams if we can but just defend better.”

Liam Mandeville marked his call-up to the England C squad this week with his fourth goal of the season which put Chesterfield 2-1 in front.

It was probably his best performance of the season but he appeared to tire and was taken off after 66 minutes.

“He gives us something different when he is at it,” Pemberton said.

“He is a big part of getting us going.

“I think he does blow up a little bit or blows up but does not become as effective, I think that is probably the best way to put it.

“The thing for me is trying to see it and I felt we had to make a change and I felt the changes were the right changes, we got ourselves back in the game.”
