“So there is a lot of things to look at from now until the end of the season but as regards to players who are out of contract I think that is where you have got to be tough, you have got to strong mentally because if it is not going to happen here then you want to be training well anyway because you never know who is watching.

“There are players still in contract anyway which is what I have looked at.

“And regards of players out of contract you have got to look what division you are going to be in, we have got to be realistic with that, and what the budget is.”

Chesterfield have one of the biggest squads in the National League and that is something Pemberton would be looking to cut if he is charge next season.

He added: “If I was staying long-term I would not particularly want a squad as big as I have got now because I think that is very difficult to manage because there is so many players who will not be playing.

“It is alright at home but when you are travelling away you are leaving players and the structure of the club is not set up where we can have a group that trains on Saturday because there is not enough of them – or there is not enough staff at the moment.

“There is a lot of things to weigh up for me to do this properly, I would certainly change quite a few things long-term.”
