Pemberton, 55, took over from John Sheridan on a temporary rolling contract at the start of January and has guided the Spireites from third bottom of the National League and five points from safety to 19th and two points clear of the bottom four.

The former Leeds United and Crystal Palace defender has won five and drawn two of his nine matches in charge before the season was brought to a halt by the coronavirus.

His initial short-term contract was ideal for both him and the club while Chesterfield FC Community Trust tried to get their takeover deal over the line. However, it has been delayed due to the pandemic.

Despite the uncertainty the club is keen to start planning for next season and we understand that if Mr Allen, 78, remains in charge then Pemberton will be offered the job on a permanent basis.

The trust is also likely to want to appoint Pemberton if they complete a takeover of the club.

Pemberton is to be taken off furlough in a couple of weeks so he can start planning for the next campaign and make decisions on players who are out of contract.
