New signing Akwasi Asante started and could have had a hat-trick before he equalised in first half stoppage time to cancel out Sean Shields’ well-taken goal five minutes earlier.

Tom Denton scored the winner on the hour when he headed in Jordan Cropper’s brilliant cross for his eighth goal of the season.

Rowe said that three most pleasing aspects of the win was the character to bounce back from being a goal down, their dominant second half performance and their game management at the end.

“It is a little bit of a relief, obviously, first game, first win, but it was a deserved win that is the most important thing,” Rowe said.

“It was a very good first half an hour, really good structure, we should have been two up. We have probably had three clear cut chances in that first 35 minutes.

“They scored and you could see the frailties there a little bit for five minutes. It is about instilling that confidence. We were quiet going back to the halfway line when they scored so it is about making sure we get over that adversity quicker. That was the only passage that I was worried or concerned with. But we showed a great reaction to get the equaliser before half-time.

“The second half I thought we completely controlled it, dominated the space, and we had them where we wanted them. They did not really cause us any problems. I thought we could have scored one or two more.

“The second goal we scored to get around to (Jordan) Cropper and obviously the delivery and header from Tom is a great goal at any level.

“I am delighted, really happy with everyone. We have only been in the building for two days so we should get some confidence from that.

“There are a lot of positives and obviously to win your first game away from home and to see the game out like that - no late goals - is obviously pleasing.”

He added: “We have got good players in that dressing room - we are in a false position.

“But let’s not get carried away because it is one win.

“We have got some good players, hungry players, and they want the best for the club. They have shown today they are fully on board and we can build.”

Rowe praised Haydn Hollis for his organisation, Will Evans for his part in the second goal, Joe Rowley for his pressing and the impact substitutes Liam Mandeville and Scott Boden had on the game.

On debutant Asante and his link-up play with Denton, he added: “He did really well. He has also had a lot of turbulence this week so normally those chances would be goals but the fact he still got in there and got his goal shows a lot about what he is.

“They had a lot of link play, probably more than perhaps a front two would on their first outing so that looks like it has got promise.”
