'˜It's too late to try and prove something'

Drew Talbot believes it's too late for Chesterfield's players to prove anything but he's vowed to give his all regardless in the remaining games.

The veteran defender rejoined the club in January but was unable to change the losing culture that has brought about a second consecutive relegation.

Although there are still three games remaining, starting today with the visit of Wycombe, Talbot says time has run out for this squad to show what they’re made of.

“To go out and show a performance is probably rubbing salt in the wounds a little bit, if we win the next two games people will be thinking where’s this come from?” he said.

“In a sense it’s bit too late to show anything really, it should have been done from the first game.

“I can’t speak for the lads, if they want to come in and try and do something in the next three games so be it.

“Giving everything out there should be a given regardless, but to use the last three games to try and prove something? It’s too late for that.

“I’ll be going out there and giving everything like I normally do.

“If we get the results, which the fans have deserved all year, then so be it.”

Talbot and the rest of the squad know the atmosphere might not be the most supportive today given the club’s exit from the Football League.

And if the fans do decide to voice their anger, Talbot certainly won’t blame them.

“I think they’re well within their rights to do whatever they want.

“It’s not been good enough.

“I’ve been told protests, but I don’t know what’s going on.

“We just have to try and concentrate on what happens on the pitch.

“It’s going to be difficult and they’re going to get at the lads, but as we’ve said there, if you can’t handle the pressure go and speak to the manager because it’s going to be a bit fiery and intense and we’re going to have to just deal with it.”

Chesterfield’s squad and other staff members were involved in a meeting at the Proact this week to disclose some of the club’s plans for the near future, which will involve cuts.

While Talbot wouldn’t reveal the specific content of the meeting, he said it reflected the harsh reality the club needs to face up to.

“There were some home truths said, I think that’s the way things are going to have to be from now on.”
