Town started the game well, putting Westella on the back foot from the first minute, but it took until the 31st minute for Dronfield to open the scoring following some good build up play featuring the impressive Liam Bryan.

Bryan’s assist set up Mawbey to sweep the ball in to the net from just inside the area.

Town came out for the second half looking to finish the job off and on 64 minutes Mawbey notched his and his team’s second with a powerful shot that gave the keeper no chance.

Westella rallied and Rob Dodson scored on 72 to make the last 18 minutes interesting, The hardworking Jamie Willis was presented with a fine opportunity to make the game safe for Town but put his shot over the bar.

Mawbey then had a chance to score his hat-trick from a central free-kick but curled his effort just round the left post.

This was a better performance from Town who could, and probably should, have won by more.

Elsewhere in Division One, Eccleshill United surged to the top of the league as goals in the last two minutes from Anil Singh and Alex Cusack claimed them a 4-2 home win over Ollerton Town, going above overnight leaders Campion who drew 2-2 at Grimsby Borough.

Penistone Church’s goalless draw at Teversal was enough to see them up into third spot, a point ahead of fourth-placed Hallam who won 4-1 at the side that drops to fifth, Hall Road Rangers.

The biggest win of the day was enjoyed by Knaresborough Town who won 7-0 at home to Shirebrook Town, Tom Hesketh with the only goal of the first half before the second period saw goals for Brad Walker, Colin Heath, Gary Collier, Tom Woollard and Sebastian Carole as well as an own goal to compound the away side’s misery.

Stephen Smith struck twice late on to cancel a Callum Harrison pair as Nostell Miners Welfare bounced back to draw 2-2 at home with Glasshoughton Welfare.

Selby Town beat Yorkshire Amateur 2-1 whilst Rossington Main defeated visitors Winterton Rangers by a single goal.

Next up for Dronfield Town is an away fixture at newly promoted Ollerton Town.
