Interest in Novak is no surprise to Spireites legend
The interest being shown in Lee Novak by League One clubs comes as no surprise to a former Spireite.
Bob Newton is a man with quite a lot in common with free agent front man Novak.
Newton, now 59, was a goalscorer for both Huddersfield and Chesterfield.
He was popular with fans, known for physically dominating defences and topped the goalscoring charts at Saltergate in both of his seasons as a Spireite.
Last season former Huddersfield forward Novak showcased his strength and ability to hold the ball up, he’s popular with fans and he was Chesterfield’s 2015/16 top goalscorer.
Chesterfield local Newton was impressed by the 27-year-old last season and can not only understand why clubs like Portsmouth are circling, but why
Danny Wilson might not be able to tempt Novak into a permanent Proact move.
“Lee is a quality player and you always want players like him in your team,” he said.
“But as the modern game goes, it’s not always a club’s decision to keep a player or not, they have agents and they move for the best offer they can get.
“If he’s going to move on, you’ve just got to replace him.”
Newton believes that Novak’s goalscoring ability, evidenced by his 15 goals for a struggling Chesterfield side, gives the team who signs him a chance in every game.
“Lee is an important part of the team, an integral part because with a striker like him you’ve always got a threat,” he said.
