The impending appointment of James Rowe as Chesterfield manager is a bit of risk, quite surprising, and very ballsy.

But, do you know what, it’s kinda exciting.

A young and ambitious manager could be exactly what the Spireites need.

I said that Chesterfield should get someone experienced because I did not feel it was the right time to take a risk. But, let’s face it, that route has not worked in the last few years, has it?

Another plus is Rowe is a boss seemingly on the up rather than working his way back down the football pyramid. How nice is it to see Chesterfield attract a manager who is already in work and is used to winning? I think it is refreshing.

However, this is a brave, bold move by the community trust and it could prove to be a masterstroke which kick-starts the club back to life, or it could come back to bite them on the backside with disastrous consequences.

From speaking to one local journalist in Gloucestershire, Rowe is fiercely ambitious, forward-thinking, modern and an innovative coach who plays attacking football. If that proves to be the case, I think he will be very much welcomed at Sheffield Road.

Having managed in the National League North for the past year he should have a good knowledge of the better players are in that division so hopefully he can pick out a few rough diamonds and polish them up.

If attack is going to be Chesterfield’s best form of defence, it could be a lot of fun.
