Tom Denton struck the winner with 20 minutes to go – his sixth goal of the season.

The win was the Spireites’ first on the road this season and moves them out of the relegation zone and up to 17th.

“It is a result we needed against a team in and around us,” Pemberton said.

“It was not a pretty game but we kind of expected that.

“The clean sheet is pleasing and we showed a lot of character and Denton has come up trumps again with another goal.

“It was two teams who were not on a particularly good run and you could see that but we had a good result last week so we knew we were in a decent place.

“To a man we had to grind it out. I think that has been questioned of this team before but I think you are seeing a difference in the mentality.

“I would like to be better on the ball and we do work at that but the games are so tight, there is no room and people are just getting pressed and it is very difficult to get the spaces so the first thing we have to do is be strong and get around the pitch and get close to people and I thought we did that to a man today.”

After a drab first half, Chesterfield had the better chances after the break, most notably from Jonathan Smith who was denied by a brilliant save by Yeovil goalkeeper Adam Smith.

Laurence Maguire went close twice and the Blues looked dangerous on the break as they tried to get a second.

Pemberton praised Town’s back three of Jamie Sharman, Will Evans and Laurence Maguire and the midfield for sticking to their jobs.

The substitutes - including Luke Rawson who assisted Denton’s goal - also impressed the Spireites boss.

“I thought we showed a lot of character,” Pemberton added. “It was a game we had to win and I am delighted for them.

“I think today we got what we deserved.”
