Humphreys extends stay at the Proact with dual role

And the veteran is to take on an official coaching role at the Proact.

The Spireites announced today that the 38-year-old has signed a new contract and will add to his 64 league appearances for the Spireites.

He joined the club in 2013 and last season played just three times in League One.

But he’s not ready to call it a day as a player just yet.

Speaking to the club’s own website he said: “I’ve always said that I’d like to carry on playing for as long as I feel fit and able and I can be an influence around the club and the training ground.

“To carry on as a player means a lot to me; I didn’t play a lot last season, but was on the bench quite a bit. You want to play for as long as possible, but also by staying on as a player I can play with the younger lads in the reserves where I can coach from the middle of the pitch.”

Humphreys, who is chairman of the Professional Footballers Association, was put in charge of the reserves last season and came close to a league title with the second string.

His status as a club coach has now been made official.

He said: “I had the coaching experience here last year.

“It was an unofficial role but I was balancing being a player and a coach. I’ve got to a certain age now where that crossover period has come, a bit later than I expected to be honest, which I am very thankful over – playing games past 35.

“I will be combining both roles and I’m fully committed to being the best I can be in both departments.”
