How we rated each Chesterfield player in lacklustre pre-season defeat to Guiseley

The Spireites were defeated 1-0 by Guiseley at the Technique Stadium on Saturday.

Dylan Wharton 6

The young goalkeeper played the full 90 minutes. He made a couple of decent saves but also had some very nervy moments from corners and crosses where he was a bit indecisive. Had a big let off when one weak shot slipped through him but it was cleared off the line.

Jordan Cropper 5

Played in a very advanced position on the right in the first half. Overall he didn’t do enough and he hobbled off with 20 minutes to go after a heavy challenge.

Josef Yarney 5

Caught out of position a few times by the lively Jonathan Wafula and Kaine Felix. Replaced by Jamie Sharman with 15 minutes to go.

Will Evans 5

Posed a threat from corners but will be very disappointed with his part in Guiseley’s goal. He was caught on the ball and Wafula tapped home after Felix’s dinked effort hit the post. Sliced a Guiseley cross onto the bar late on.

Haydn Hollis 5

Got 70 minutes under his belt before being replaced by Laurence Maguire. Cleared one off the line after a scramble in the box.

David Buchanan 5

Usually so reliable but didn’t have his best game. Put in a few dangerous corners though. Did make one good clearance off the line.

Milan Butterfield 5

A fairly quiet game. Replaced on the hour by Joe Rowley.

Jonathan Smith 5

Similar to Butterfield. Didn’t get into the opposition’s box as much as the last two games.

Liam Mandeville 6+

Probably Chesterfield’s best player in the first half. Saw a lot of the ball early on and kept things ticking over. Picked out sone nice passed and spreaded the play. His excellent overhead-kick from Cropper’s cross went just over the bar. Came off at half-time for Curtis Weston.

Scott Boden 5

Didn’t get much service and was replaced after an hour.

Luke Rawson 6

Headed over Buchanan’s cross early on and generally did well in the air and put himself about. Came off for Tom Denton at half-time.

Curtis Weston 6

Came on at the break so it will be a relief to get his first 45 minutes under his belt after recovering from a calf injury.

Tom Denton 6

Replaced Rawson at the break. He wasn’t far off from heading in Buchanan’s cross in the second half but it will a little behind him and he couldn’t get it on target.

Joe Rowley 6

Came on after 60 minutes and tried to make things happen. Pushing Mandeville for a starting spot next week.

Jack McKay 6

Came on with 30 minutes to go and did okay. Gave Town some fresh legs down the right.

Laurence Maguire 6+

Played the last 20 minutes. Charged out of defence and went past a couple of players before seeing his shot tipped wide in what was a rare moment of quality for Town.

Regan Hutchinson 6

Replaced Cropper with 20 minutes to go and got stick in.

Jamie Sharman 6

Replaced Yarney for the last 15 minutes and was steady enough.
