He said: “I think, if we keep everyone fit, we can mount a challenge for the play-offs. If not better, who knows?

“We’ve had a good start to the season. We haven’t got the biggest squad in the world but we have got a good squad and barring major injuries to a lot of players we could have a really good season.”

Hird, 28, has made more than 150 appearances for Chesterfield following his 2012 move from Doncaster Rovers.

“I’ve been here now for four or five years,” he said. “We’ve had good squads. The chairman has always backed whichever manager is here.

“He’s backed the manager this time and he’s put a great squad together. Keeping everyone fit I think we can mount a challenge this season.”

Hird has played in the Championship before, with Rovers.

“I’d like to have another go at the Championship,” he said. “I was playing there in the early part of my career at Doncaster. I was a young pro then.

“Now I’m a veteran at 28. There aren’t many in this dressing room who are experienced players in terms of age so I am classed as that.
