Herd misses Blackpool, Spireites on light duties

It was hoped the midfielder would return to action at the weekend for the trip to Gillingham, but his hip flexor problem hasn’t fully cleared up.

And facing another tough encounter just three days after that win over the high flying Gills, Wilson was keen to ensure no one else in his Spireites squad joined Herd on the treatment table.

“Everybody is fine, we’ll have the same squad available that we did on Saturday,” he said.

“Chris Herd is getting closer, but he won’t be ready for tomorrow, we’ll keep assessing him though ahead of the weekend.

“You’ve got to make sure you rest as much as you possibly can.

“Preparation doesn’t just have to be physical, it’s mental as much as anything.

“We’ve just got to make sure the boys get the right balance, it’s been a fairly easy Monday in physical terms but a bit more intense for the grey matter.”

Wilson hopes Chesterfield will continue to start games on the front foot, having hit the net twice in the first half in each of their last two outings.

But despite morale soaring at the Proact, he knows fellow strugglers Blackpool will put up a stubborn resistance.

“We’re coming off the back of a fantastic win and confidence is high,” he said.

“We’ve got to make sure we turn the screw as quickly as we can. The start of the game is very important.

“But I expect them to be well organised and well drilled. I don’t expect them to try and make a footballing game of it.

“We might have to be patient at certain times.

“With a bit of luck we might break them down early, but you don’t always get a goal in the first two or three minutes of games.”

The form table might suggest that Blackpool will be an easier proposition for Spireites than third-placed Gillingham were.

Wilson is paying no heed to their recent results however.

“I don’t look at the league and take a judgement from that,” he said.

“We look at the team as individuals and a collective and they’ve got some good players.

“They are capable of beating anyone in the league, just like we are.

“We’re not going to prejudge them on a bad result or two recently, we know we’ll have to be at the top of our game again.

“They’ll be very rugged, very disciplined, they’ll sit in there and make it frustrating at times but they also have players who can score goals.”
