Humphreys was a free agent after spending 12 years at Hartlepool United, during which time he made over 500 appearances to set a new club record.

After starting out as a striker at Sheffield Wednesday, he earned a reputation for versatility at Hartlepool, playing on the left wing, at left-back and in central midfield.

Humphreys said: “I’m really excited at the prospect of a fresh challenge.

“I’ve been so impressed with the players, management team and facilities at the club and I can’t wait to get started. This is a fantastic football club and I’m delighted to be a part of it.”

Manager Paul Cook believes Humphreys will be a very useful addition to the squad.

He said: “Ritchie’s had a good career and we’re delighted he has agreed to join us.

“He has trained with us and showed great professionalism with a superb attitude to training. He’ll offer cover in various positions.”

Meanwhile, Cook revealed that talks are being held with Marine centre-back Matty Brown, who has also been on trial.

“We’re speaking to Matty about terms and hopefully if that’s agreeable with everybody, there could be a deal to be done. The same would apply for Jamie Devitt,” he said.

John Shaw and Conor Clifford have both departed after training with the club but French midfielder Hendrick Cakin remains on trial.
