Going nowhere '“ Wilson up for the fight and won't walk away

The Chesterfield boss was very upbeat in his press conference today, previewing tomorrow’s trip to Coventry City.

But when he was asked about supporters who want him to resign, Wilson was bullish.

He insists he’s up for the fight and suggests that anyone who isn’t walks away.

“There’s going to be upset, whether it be from the fans on the terraces or the players, whoever it may be,” he said.

“Nobody likes to be in this position. But this what you get all the time.

“Someone always wants to have change for whatever reason, because you don’t get everything going their own way, they don’t want to stand up and fight, let’s walk away and change it.

“It’s ridiculous. If you’re expecting me to stand down then you’re asking the wrong person because I ain’t going to do it by the way.”

Wilson says his remit when he arrived on Christmas Eve last year was to get the Spireites up the table.

So leaving now, with them a point off the bottom of League One following a run of five straight league defeats, isn’t an option for the veteran boss.

“I was brought in last season in this position, what’s the point in going now when I was brought in to get them up the league? I’ll go shall I? And leave them at the bottom of the league? It’s absolutely ridiculous.

“It’s a ridiculous asumption to think that will happen and it certainly won’t happen from my point of view.

“Now if people feel pressure that’s up to them, if they want some blame to throw at me that’s fine, I can take that all day long.

“But that won’t help the players, that won’t help anyone connected with the club who wants to push things forward.

“We said it was going to be difficult from day one, everyone got carried away at the beginning of the season when we’d had a few good results and they’re all thinking about top six and top two, but we said listen it can turn round as quick.

“We’ve had a bad run, who says we can’t turn it around? Nobody, nobody knows but we certainly believe in the club we can do it.”

Having cited hard work and belief as the cures for what ails the club currently, Wilson called for fans to rally round the squad to help them come through a tough patch.

“It sounds like some people are not up for the fight and if they’re not then don’t bother, walk away from it, it’s fine by me,” he said.

“We don’t need people like that, we need people who are going to be supportive, strong understanding and that’s what we need as a club. Not just right now, all season.

“If people want to start throwing blame then fine, but it doesn’t do anyone any good.”
