George Foster hails 'magnificent' Chesterfield performance in win at Sutton United

Haydn Hollis headed the winner six minutes before half-time at Gander Green Lane on Tuesday night to ensure James Rowe’s unbeaten record as Town manager remains intact with two wins and a draw from his first three games in charge.

Town came away with all three points after a disciplined and well-drilled performance against the second-placed hosts.

“It is a magnificent result and I think it was a magnificent performance,” Foster said.

“I thought they showed a fantastic desire tonight and deserved to win the game.

“We knew it was going to be difficult today, they (Sutton) are terrific in the way they set up and we knew it might be a set play that might win the game for us and that is what we practiced and it came off.

“We know what was coming today and we combatted it and we thoroughly deserved to win.

“We knew it was going to be a battle, and it was a battle for us. The second clean sheet in three games is fantastic.

“I think he (Rowe) is delighted with the response he has got from the players. He does not leave a stone unturned. There is not a player that goes out there that does not know what their role is or what is expected of them.”

For the second week running Chesterfield made two signings before kick-off in full-back Joel Taylor, 24, from Chester and central midfielder George Carline, 27, on a free transfer after he left Rowe’s former club Gloucester City by mutual agreement last week. Both Taylor and Carline started the game.

“He knows what he wants, he knows the way he wants his team to play, he knows the type of player he wants and he goes and gets them and that is what he did at Gloucester,” Foster added.

“I have got to give credit to the chairman and the board of directors for allowing him to bring them in.

“We will enjoy this one tonight, we will rest them up tomorrow and Thursday we will do our preparation for Barnet on Saturday.”
