'˜Frustrated' Maguire knuckling down in training to get shirt back

The young Spireites defender admits it was ‘difficult’ to hear he was to be left out of Monday’s game at Hartlepool.

“I felt frustrated on Monday when I found out I wasn’t going to be playing,” he said.

“The Salford game and here against Barnet I felt I did well personally.

“But it’s a team game and when results aren’t going right the gaffer obviously wanted to freshen things up and give other people a chance.”

Having been in and out of the starting XI this season, the 21-year-old defender wants to nail down a position in Martin Allen’s side.

He believes the starting point is the training pitch.

“I get my head down, I always feel like if you do get left out you’ve got to knuckle down and show him why you should be playing.

“When I got told I wasn’t going to be playing, the first thing on my mind was try and get the shirt for Saturday.

“We’ll see tomorrow, hopefully I’ll get in the side and keep my shirt for the game on Tuesday at Boreham Wood.”

Maguire says the mood in the camp ‘hasn’t been the best’ after four straight defeats but the squad are relishing the chance to bounce back tomorrow at home to Leyton Orient.

Having been disappointed by their efforts at set-pieces, work has gone in this week to help them improve in that area.

He hopes it pays off handsomely tomorrow.

“We’re going into it looking for three points.

“We had a good session on Wednesday and reviewed the game from Monday, watched a lot of clips.

“As a centre-half, playing left-back, we’ve been disappointed with set-plays.

“It’s a big part of the modern game and on Saturday hopefully we’ll score from a set-play and get the three points.”
