Former Spireites chairman Dave Allen had ugly confrontation with '˜abusive' fans after Blades defeat

Just 24 hours before he resigned as chairman and director at Chesterfield FC, the club's majority shareholder Dave Allen had an ugly confrontation with a pair of '˜abusive' fans at the Proact Stadium.

The incident happened after the Sheffield United game, in which the Spireites were beaten 4-1.

A pair of supporters were said to have banged on the window of the board room containing Allen, his wife, other directors and guests.

Former Sheffield Wednesday chairman Allen then confronted the duo, who were allegedly abusive towards him, before security staff became involved.

A witness said it was a frightening exchange and some at the club have suggested it may well have been a factor in his decision to resign at last night’s AGM.

Allen famously had issues with a group of supporters at Sheffield Wednesday and said recently that he regrets getting involved at Hillsborough.

In a book that addresses his time as chairman of the Owls he said: ““We were having a good run, I was putting all this money into the club, and then, three rows down from me [at the ground] a kid stands up in a T-shirt saying ‘F*** off Allen’.

“I had my two grandsons there with me who were about eight or nine at the time. Disgraceful. ‘I could do without this,’ I thought.”

The businessman, who is owed millions by Chesterfield and has the first charge on the Proact stadium, walked out of last night’s meeting after his shock announcement.

Allen intimated in his brief resignation statement that his suggestion to fellow directors that they waive the interest on their loans was not met with unanimous approval.

That was the only reason he gave for resigning before leaving the AGM, having vowed not to comment further.
